Backun Hawkins Signature clarinet mouthpiece
The Backun Hawkins Signature is the fourth model in the Signature Series and was developed in collaboration with mouthpiece maker Richard Hawkins. While other models in this range were designed around the preferences of soloists, this clarinet mouthpiece reflects Hawkins' own view of the ideal mouthpiece.
With a 1.08 mm tip opening in the close/medium category and a medium-long facing, this model is aimed at players who want control with room for nuance. The refined internal bore is designed to balance resistance and resonance, which translates into stable response and fluid tone production in practice.
Warm sound and clear articulation
This Backun mouthpiece is known for an exceptionally fluid tone. You get a classical, warm sound with very clear articulation, without the tone ever becoming harsh, which makes it well suited to settings where both detail and color matter.
Despite the relatively narrow opening, the medium-long facing leaves enough room for tonal variation. That allows the Backun Hawkins Signature to work well in chamber music and symphonic repertoire.
O-ring fit and reed advice
Instead of cork, the Hawkins uses three interchangeable O-rings in sizes S, M and L. This gives a consistent fit and direct vibration transfer to the instrument. At Magna Music, you can also get personal advice from staff who play themselves, which is useful when you are looking for a mouthpiece that matches your reed choice and playing style.
With a 1.08 mm opening, this clarinet mouthpiece works best with medium to hard reeds. For cane reeds, the recommended strength is 3.5 to 4.0, such as Vandoren V12 or V21, and for synthetic reeds 3.50 to 3.75, such as Légère European Cut.
