Backun Euro Signature clarinet mouthpiece for European tuning
The Backun Euro Signature was designed by Richard Hawkins as a professional clarinet mouthpiece that bridges American and European clarinet traditions. This model brings the character and stability of the Signature Series to the European concert pitch standard of A=442Hz, as used in many orchestras.
With a 1.08 mm tip opening in the close/medium range and a medium-long facing, this Backun mouthpiece suits players who value control, evenness and reliable intonation.
Focused sound and stable response
In use, the Backun Euro Signature delivers a very focused, dark sound with a strong core. The transition between registers is smooth and the pitch remains extremely stable, even in the upper register, which makes this clarinet mouthpiece especially suitable for advanced players and professional use.
Despite its relatively closed tip opening, the mouthpiece responds quickly and offers a surprising amount of projection. You notice that in articulation, where response and definition are immediately present.
O-ring fit and recommended reeds
Backun uses an O-Ring System here with three interchangeable O-rings in S, M and L. This replaces traditional cork, leading to a more stable fit and better vibration transfer to the clarinet.
The mouthpiece is made from Marbled Slate hard rubber, finished in a marbled grey slate appearance. With a 1.08 mm opening, it performs best according to the stated recommendation with cane reeds in strength 3.5 to 4.0, such as Vandoren V12 or V21, and synthetic reeds in strength 3.50 to 3.75, such as Légère European Cut.
