Tama Starphonic Bubinga snare drum with warm, rounded response
The Tama PBC146 focuses on a slightly thinner bubinga shell than the standard Starclassic Bubinga drums. That gives this snare drum a softer, warmer sound with more response to dynamic playing, while keeping the rich bubinga tone and resonance intact. In a 14" x 6" format, this model offers a versatile size for drummers who want plenty of nuance from their snare.
The 7 mm 8-ply bubinga shell with 1 cordia outer ply works together with the Grooved Hoop to bring out sharp projection, warmth and extra low end from the wood. The Matte Natural Cordia finish completes the instrument visually as neatly as its tonal design.
Control and tuning stability in the details
The Tama Starphonic Bubinga snare drum uses a patented Linear-Drive strainer, developed for more control over the lever and an especially smooth snare wire action. Even when switching quickly, you avoid harsh unwanted noise because the mechanism brings the snare wires into contact with the resonant head in a controlled way. The butt plate is set at a 30-degree angle, helping the cord or strap stay in place more securely while reducing unnecessary tension on the strainer and head.
The Non-Loosening Rubber Gaskets inside the claw hooks also help the drum hold its tuning during playing. The ratchet style snappy tension adjuster prevents the snare wires from slipping back and allows extremely small 0.083 mm adjustments, so you can dial in the snare response with great precision.
Built smart for maintenance and head changes
With the Freedom Lug & Claw Hook construction, you can move the claw hook and tension bolt away from the hoop once the bolts are loosened. That means you can change heads without fully removing every tension rod, which saves time in practice. The detachable butt plate also lets you replace the resonant head without having to reset and reinstall the snare wires.
The Grooved Snare Side Hoop includes a cutout on the underside to make mounting and removal even easier. The included MS20RL14C Super Sensitive Hi-Carbon Snare Wire is designed for a crispier sound and greater sensitivity because the wires sit closer to the resonant head.
